The Princess
An Award-Winning Signature Portrait by Paul Gold

In 2006, CNN's online art gallery launched a nationwide search for compelling stories and visionary artwork that could inspire the world. That’s when a former racehorse named Gunner galloped into my lens—and into history.

Gunner’s career on the track had ended early, but his story was far from over. Rescued from the looming threat of slaughter, this off-the-track Thoroughbred (OTTB) found a second calling as a lesson horse, gently guiding children, adults, special needs students, and even wounded warriors through the healing power of horsemanship.

During one unforgettable photo session, Gunner moved with purpose and pride across a grassy paddock, carrying Laurie—an accomplished equestrian and fearless athlete. I captured that fleeting moment of motion, grace, and trust. Inspired by the scene, I used my decades of experience in digital transformation to create what would become one of my most cherished CGI masterpieces: The Princess.

In this reimagined dreamscape, Laurie rides in flowing white, embodying strength and serenity, while Gunner charges forward against a fairytale skyline. It’s a portrait of hope, nobility, and second chances.

The Princess was selected by CNN and proudly featured in their online art gallery from 2006 to 2009. More than a beautiful image, it became a statement: racehorses deserve life beyond the track. They are not disposable—they are partners, teachers, and silent healers.

Long before the arrival of AI tools, I was developing and perfecting the intricate techniques behind computer-generated imagery. My work has always been rooted in storytelling, compassion, and the timeless ability to reveal the soul behind the subject.

Let The Princess serve as a reminder—of transformation, of beauty, and of the extraordinary bond between horse and rider.
